Kristen Bell on the Big Gay Following of Big-Screen Bound ‘Veronica Mars’

We better deliver. Should the gay community be equally excited? Kristen Bell discussed the show's popularity among gay viewers last year in an interview with The Advocate . "Hell, yeah," said Bell when asked if she was aware of the show's big gay following. "Veronica always stood up for the underdog, and many people in the LGBT community identify themselves as an underdog because that s what America does to them.
Veronica was always a friend to outsiders and very much against bullying of any kind." Veronica Mars also tackled various gay-themed mysteries, such as one in which a closeted lesbian cheerleader played by Kristin Cavallari blackmailed a group of her closeted classmates. In one major arc, a rapist-murderer was a young man who had been molested by his baseball coach and was now struggling with his sexuality. Bell addressed the risk of such creepy gay villain storylines encouraging viewers to equate being gay with being evil. "I think the point of how some of those Veronica Mars characters were written is that closeted gayness or stifling one s true identity causes pain, torment, and hurt, and hurt people tend to hurt people," Bell explained to The Advocate . "If you see a character doing something bad, and then that character admits that they re in the closet or that they were molested or something, I believe it s the writer trying to prove the point that bad things can happen when we stifle or abuse people.

Now that Madame has found a new straight man the talented and funny Gary Holland the comedy legend is back onstage, chasing laughs and, of course, men.
Legendary party-producer and White Party founder Jeffrey Sanker will honor Madame during the weekend-long bacchanal (Mar.
29-31) when he christens her with the title of Dame. We caught up with the notorious cougar, who has an affinity for gay men, before her upcoming aristocratic ascension to ask about her return to the spotlight, the first time she met Sanker, and where a Dame goes to get a drink in Palm Springs. Gay.net: Where have you been keeping yourself?
Madame: Oh, honey, I ve been traveling, everywhere from Bangkok to Bangladesh. I ve done everything twice and loved it both times. Now I m performing again, trying to put a smile on everyone s face, even if I have to do it one man at a time.

Is Broadway’s ‘Kinky Boots’ Drag Queen a ‘Heterosexual Transvestite’?
But according to Michael Musto at the Village Voice , who recently attended a Kinky Boots promo event, the musical may not be as gay as you think. When Musto mentioned the "gay drag queen" character to Fierstein, he reportedly replied, "He's a heterosexual transvestite!" Huh? "He's asexual in the movie. He never talks about anything.
My feeling is that Lola is so damaged that she doesn't have sexuality. She has sensuality and genius, but no self-worth." Well, leave it to outspoken out performer Billy Porter, who stars as Lola/Simon, to set the record straight so to speak. "But Lola is gay," Porter told Musto, contradicting Fierstein. "We're in a fight about this. Do you think after 25 years of being out, and now wearing a dress and playing the character the way I do, that I'm gonna be straight in it?
Nobody's gonna believe my version of the character is straight! That's not how I play it!" As for clues in the script that suggest Lola's sexuality, Porter said, "There is a bit of sexual innuendo at the top of Act II. It used to go in the direction of 'He's straight.' Now it's 'He ain't straight.'" However, both Porter and Fierstein seem to agree that Lola is probably a virgin and that the real love story at the heart of the musical is between him and the straight guy who has inherited the shoe factory.
Added Porter, "It's not about who I'm fucking." Kinky Boots opens Apr.
