Meme: Dylan O’Brien Goes To Prom On "New Girl," Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s Proposal Ruined By Sand Crabs

They may have found a way to make me watch New Girl . An upcoming episode will have the gang reminiscing about how they lost their virginity, and Jess will flash back to her prom date, a gorgeous, romantic, guitar-playing teen played by Dylan O'Brien . But did he seal the deal?

Colorado has approved a civil unions bill, which the governor has pledged to sign. Colorado has a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage, so this is as close as we can get for now, though this ads Colorado to the group of states that President Obama addressed in his Prop 8 brief. And right on cue, Catholic Charities is threatening to cease adoption services in Colorado.

Meanwhile, committees in the Senate and the House in Minnesota have advanced their respective marriage equality bills to the full chambers, where the fight will be tougher. The U.S. has funded a study under National Institutes of Health to study why 75% of lesbians are obese and gay men are not.

Are 75% of lesbians really obese? Because if so, I must know a lot of the other 25%. Travis Matthews , who partnered with James Franco for Interior.

Leather Bar . says that we've entered into a new era of gay films. "I think we ve entered a new era of sorts where gay films are being made in the absence of the well-tread gay crises (HIV, bullying, homophobia) or trope (coming out stories, hot twink comedies), in favor of a good story. I see films popping up that are good films first, but with casts whose gayness is just a taken-for-granted piece of the story.

It s about respecting the audience s intelligence on some level and trusting that the audience doesn t need to be educated about the gay experience. TVLine says that Kurt and Adam are going Greek get your minds out of the gutter. Instead, they'll attract the attention of a fraternity after the save the day for the spring rager.

Can anyone imagine Kurt at a rager? There's a new interactive map that lets you see the top porn search terms by state/country/province. One of the more common terms (and the only regular appearance of "gay" seems to be "straight (gay)" which means that people like watching gay stuff, just not thinking about gay dudes doing each other.

Denial is evidently a river in places other than Egypt. When President Obama met with Congressional Democrats, an executive order preventing discrimination in the federal workforce and ENDA were not topics of discussion. The American Family Association is advocating criminalizing sex outside of marriage.

Good luck with that. Sherlock may have just started filming season three, but they've already confirmed a season four. For no reason, here are Liam and Chris Hemsworth shirtless and surfing in Australia.

When Jesse Tyler Ferguson was set to propose to Justin Mikita , he had planned a romantic moonlight proposal on the beach in Mexico, but "was scuttled when they were chased away by sand crabs." In case you were out of things to be worried about, the Ukraine has lost several of their military dolphins. Some were trained to find mines, but others were armed with knives and guns to kill divers. So you might want to rethink your spring break plans.

As I mentioned in the comments of yesterday's Meme, the suicide of porn actor Wilfried Knight was a complicated affair, coming so shortly after the suicide of his husband. DOMA may have played a part. "Jerry was an American citizen and Wilfried was a French national. Despite the challenges of being in a multi-national relationship, they tried very hard to make it work and stay together.

Wilfried even enrolled into acupuncture school in Portland so that they can stay together. With his schooling and attached visa coming to a close end, Jerry desperately looked for work in Vancouver, Canada. They would have preferred to stay Portland but due to American immigration laws their Canadian marriage was not recognized and Wilfried would have to leave the U.S." 42 Things That Prove Joseph Gordon-Levitt Is the Perfect Man Venezuelan opposition candidate Henrique Capriles has been the butt of some jokes from Nicol s Maduro , the right hand of late president Hugo Chavez , insinuating he might be gay.

Capriles decided to respond in the most direct way possible. "I'd like to send a respectful and considerate message in rejection to the homophobic remarks made by Nicol s Maduro today. It's not the first time. I believe in a society without exclusion and that's the way I express it to the country.

A society where no one feels excluded based on the way they think, their race, their creed, their sexual orientation. People should go out and reject it.That's fascism. Absolute fascism.

From the extreme right. If that's how you want to attack me, let it be. But from here on I will always demand respect for all Venezuelans.

Because the society that we want to build in Venezuela is a society without exclusion." PETA again are questioning their validity by throwing a fit that whaling is an included activity in the new Assassin's Creed game. Ubisoft responded the only appropriate way. "History is our playground in Assassin's Creed. Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag is a work of fiction that depicts the real events during the Golden Era of Pirates.

We do not condone illegal whaling, just as we don't condone a pirate lifestyle of poor hygiene, plundering, hijacking ships, and over-the-legal-limit drunken debauchery.

And even if the game does glorify whaling as it certainly glorifies the life of a pirate I don't think it will lead to a generation of gamers who head to the Caribbean to hunt down humpbacks.

Just as I don't think anyone who played the previous Assassin's Creed games have found employment as a murderer for hire." Continue reading

UK: Blackburn Rovers footballer accused of making anti-gay insults during Brighton game

Kazim-Richards pictured playing for Galatasaray (Photo: Ultraslansi) Police have launched an investigation after complaints that Blackburn Rovers Colin Kazim-Richards was involved in a homophobic incident during an away match against Brighton and Hove Albion. The Argus newspaper reports Kazim-Richards was seen to be making homophobic insults on Tuesday evening towards fans on at least five occasions during the 1-1 draw at Brighton s Amex Stadium. Sussex Police football liaison officer PC Darren Balkham said he had received numerous complaints about the alleged abuse.

He said: We will be investigating this fully and will be taking statements and looking through camera footage. Whether you are on the pitch or in the stands, Sussex Police takes any allegations of homophobic language or gestures seriously.

26-year-old Kazim-Richards previously played for Brighton and Hove Albion until 2006 before moving to Sheffield United. Officers investigating the complaints against Kazim-Richards have contacted Lancashire Police, Brighton and Hove Albion and Blackburn FC for assistance.

A spokesman for the Football Association confirmed a number of complaints had been received and said they would be working with police to investigate the incident.

Albion fans are often subjected to homophobic chants by opposition fans due to Brighton and Hove s reputation for its large LGBT community.

UK: LGBT community urged to consider adoption and fostering

As part of the 2nd annual LGBT Adoption and Fostering Week, LGBT people are being urged to learn more about adoption and fostering. The event runs between Monday 4 March Sunday 10 March and is organised by New Family Social, the charity run by LGBT adopters and foster carers for families and families-to-be. The Fostering Network says an estimated 4,000 children need adopting every year, with the British Association of Adoption and Fostering (BAAF), stating that around 9,000 extra foster carers are needed to bridge the shortfall for children currently in care.

However, experts say this could be done if just two percent of LGBT people came forward to foster or adopt. LGBT Adoption and Fostering Week is a series of events around the country aimed to educate prospective parents and carers about the processes involved and to let them hear from others in their area who have adopted or fostered children themselves. Action for Children is the week s main sponsor, and the charity s Director of Public Policy, Helen Donohoe, said: From 140 years of working with the UK s most vulnerable children, we know how important it is to find the best possible placement for each and every child in care and we know that LGBT people often come to adoption or fostering as the first choice for expanding their family, bringing love, real enthusiasm and resourcefulness.

Throughout LGBT Adoption and Fostering Week, our friendly approachable staff will be on hand at events across the UK to answer questions and help potential parents take the first steps towards providing one of the thousands of children desperately in need with a stable, loving home. Andy Leary-May, Director of New Family Social, added: Some people are still put off by fears that they won t be welcomed by agencies, but things are changing. In our group we have huge and diverse range of families, including plenty of parents who are single, or in their fifties.

It s clear to see how well our children are doing, and what a positive and rewarding choice fostering and adoption can be .

The Whole Day Through by Patrick Gale

I was first introduced to Patrick Gale when I swapped books with a fellow traveller in Scotland in 2001. I'd just finished Timothy Findley's Pilgrim and happily traded it for Gale's Rough Music. Mine was definitely the better half of the deal.

This morning I finished listening to Gale's The Whole Da ... Continue reading

Why Can’t Men Compete In Olympic Synchronized Swimming?

Why Can't Men Compete In Olympic Synchronized Swimming? With men now presenting bouquets and medals, women punching women in boxing and two women competing for Saudi Arabia (a country that has only allowed male athletes in the past), the London games are one step closer to gender equality. But two Olympics sports remain closed to men: rhythmic gymnastics and synchronized swimming.

Men's synchronized swimming often conjures up the image of the 1984 Saturday Night Live sketch in which Martin Short and Harry Shearer performed a ridiculously simple and overly dramatic synchronized swimming routine in the shallow end of a pool; two men (one soft-spoken and the other mentally handicapped) with the laughable dream of one day competing in the Olympics. But in reality, there are men's synchronized swimming teams all around the world. Toronto has a competitive men's team called Toronto Synchro and San Francisco's LGBT and straight-friendly Tsunami Tsynchro team (pictured below at left) has won firsts at every Gay Games and IGLA championship since 2004.

There's even all-male teams in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Holland, Ukraine, and the Czech Reupblic as well as two recent documentaries about Japanese and Swedish teams called Waterboys (2001) and Men Who Swim (2010), respectively. Britain's only all-male synchronized swim team, Out To Swim Angels, hoped to join the Olympics this year. However, the governing body for worldwide aquatic sports competition, La F d ration Internationale de Natation (FINA) maintains synchronized swimming is for women-only, forbidding male synchronized swimmers from competing at the highest levels and keeping younger competitors from receiving collegiate scholarships in the sport.

The reason, according to a June 2008 Details magazine interview with president of United States Synchronized Swimming and Olympic official Ginny Jasontek is, We cannot allow men in a women s sport. Men don t compete against women in gymnastics. As a result of such views, Bill May an award-winning synchronized swimmer from California was barred from competing in the 2004 Athens Olympics because of his gender-he later went to become the only guy performing aquatic stunts in the Las Vegas Cirque Du Soleil show O .

Similarly, accomplished California teen Kenyon Smith (pictured right) tried out for the 2008 Beijing games--soon after advancing to final team cut, Smith got disqualified just for being a guy. Smith identifies as straight but has been called gay by gay and straight men alike who consider synchronized swimming "a woman's sport." He has also met young boys in the sport who want to quit over such taunts. Online articles about aspiring teenage German synchronized swimmer Niklas Stoepel (pictured upper left) have also insinuated that he's gay or effeminate.

A British site called him a a "fairy" and an ESPN article said, "We cringe a bit at the notion of a male athlete whose pre-game routine consists of leg shaving and picking the perfect sequined costume," concluding, "Give Stoepel the shot to synch swim sans the sequins." However, both the ESPN article and another in the San Francisco Bay Guardian did note that, "The sport of synchronized swimming is, like dance, about graceful movement and beauty in action as much as it is about strength, power, and dynamism. It takes a strong man, or woman, to compete in the sport, and only those in top condition excel." Stoepel adds that national level judges him score him more strictly than his female competitors. May once got booed at a meet after beating one of his female rivals and a female competitor of Smith's complained that she and other female athletes simply can't match mens' physical abilities, making head-to-head mixed gender competitions inherently unfair.

But the proliferation of men's teams around the world could help change those perceptions, and even pave the way for a male-inclusive space with mixed-gender two-person teams or all-male teams in future Olympics. Sanela Nikolic, the coach of the British Out To Swim Angels team told The Independent , "In this modern world, it is time to move beyond the arbitrary preconceptions we have of certain types of sport." "Synchronised swimming is one of the last few examples of a discipline not open to both men and women. A whole generation of athletes needs to be created to compete at Olympic level, and this will take time.

It may need to start out as a demonstration sport to raise its profile, but the issue of placing rather arbitrary gender restrictions on Olympic sports must be challenged." video platformvideo managementvideo solutionsvideo player Continue reading

Gay rights activists decry Dharun Ravi s early release from jail

Dharun Ravi was sentenced for 30 days for spying on his gay roommate, who later killed himself Dharun Ravi, the former Rutgers University student who was sentenced to 30 days for spying on his gay roommate, who later killed himself, has been released from prison ten days early a move that has prompted sharp criticism from local gay rights activists.

Tyler Clementi, a student from Rutgers University, New Jersey, jumped from the George Washington Bridge in September 2010, allegedly after Mr Dharun Ravi filmed him kissing an older man, and streamed it on the internet.

Mr Ravi was charged and found guilty on all 15 counts, including bias intimidation, tampering evidence and hindering apprehension.

Steven Goldstein, chairman and chief executive of Garden State Equality, New Jersey s largest LGBT organisation, said in a statement: Dharun Ravi s walk out of jail after only 20 days is practically a Monopoly game s get out of jail free card a travesty of justice. Campus Pride, which is a US-wide university association for LGBT students, issued a statement that he was deeply disappointed and remains conflicted over the punishment in this case. Its head, Shane Windmeyer, told the Los Angeles Times: Colleges and universities across the country need to take greater accountability for the safety of LGBT students and actively discourage the bystander behaviors that attributed to this tragedy. The case and the sentencing has deeply divided the LGBT community in the US, with many arguing the sentencing was too lenient, while others suggesting that Mr Ravi s culpability has been overestimated by the media.

It is understood that Mr Ravi, though facing three years of probation, in addition to $11,000 fine and 300 hours of community service, will not face deportation to India, his native country.
