Oahu, the Gay Gem of the Ocean
And since the state s civil unions law went into effect this year, Honolulu has also emerged as an affordable destination for both same-sex weddings and honeymoons. Travelers who desire to mix romance with luxury will do no better than the Royal Hawaiian . The iconic pink palace is the city s grande dame of hospitality.
The rooms are lavishly appointed and offer breathtaking views of the Pacific. The staff welcomes guests with traditional lei greetings and then offers exceptional customer service tailored to every guest s whim. A section of the beach is reserved for guests of the hotel, providing comfortable lounge chairs and eye-catching umbrellas for relief from the endless sunshine.
Across the driveway is the majestic Sheraton Waikiki , which towers over the other beachfront hotels, offering gorgeous views, luxurious amenities, and an attentive staff. The Helumoa Playground is a shared pool area for guests of both hotels and features two freshwater swimming pools (one for adults only), a 15-foot-high waterslide, and a pair of large whirlpool spas. Adjacent to both properties is the Royal Hawaiian Center , an enclave of dining, entertainment, and shopping opportunities that spans four stories and more than three city blocks.
High-end fashion shops Bulgari, Fendi, and Herm s among others nestle next to a variety of affordable dining options, including the Five-Star International Buffet, with a tempting array of local, regional, and international culinary delights. The center s courtyard offers a multitude of entertainment options, including a concert featuring Elton John and Lady Gaga impersonators, as well as complimentary cultural classes in hula dancing, lei making, ukulele playing, quilting, and weaving. Visitors with classic sensibilities will undoubtedly revel in the Old World luxury of Shangri La , the estate of the late heiress-philanthropist Doris Duke.
Situated on a stunning rocky cliff of the Pacific with a distinctive view of Diamond Head and considered one of the island s most architecturally significant homes, Shangri La also houses an impressive collection of Islamic art. There are at least two monthly events with special appeal to the gay and lesbian traveler. On the last Sunday of each month, the Sheraton Waikiki hosts Phoenix, Hawaii s only oceanfront LGBT party, at Rumfire , the hotel s stylish restaurant.
For the culture-minded, Art After Dark is a hugely popular art and cocktails mixer at the Honolulu Museum of Art on Beretania Street. The event takes place the last Friday of the month, January through October. Film fans may want to plan vacations around the Honolulu Rainbow Film Festival , showcasing the best in LGBT cinema, which typically takes place around the same time as Honolulu Pride (late May early June).

Vintage Hunk: Jan-Michael Vincent
These shots of Mr. Vincent and his appendage only whetted gay fans' appetite for the sexy stud. Jan Michael Vincent's fame rests primary on his epic mini-series The Winds of War , his cult series Airwolf, and the great cult classic film Big Wednesday .
Jan-Michael Vincent was born in Denver, Colorado in July, 1944. He is the same age as your devoted hunk chronicler. After attending Ventura College in CA and a stint in the National Guard, Vincent was spotted by a talent scout.
This lead to numerous TV appearances and some minor movies roles, but soon better movies assignments came with The Mechanic (with 70s star Charles Bronson), Going Home with Robert Mitchum and the TV film Tribes where Vincent excelled as the hippie draftee. In 1978 Jan-Michael Vincent starred in the great cult surfing epic Big Wednesday . Often referred to as The Gone With The Wind of Surfer movies, Big Wednesday was a wonderful coming of age film co-starring William Katt and Gary Busey.
The film was divided into four parts and covered the years 1962-1974. While surfing was the main theme, the Vietnam War and the seismic changes in America were crafted into this fabulous film directed by John Milius. Big Wednesday was not a commercial success.
I saw it at a studio sneak preview in Westwood in 1978 and thought it was going to be a smash hit. Steven Spielberg thought it was headed for box office heaven too likening it to a combination of American Graffiti and Jaws ! But the film was sold chiefly as a surfing flick not the great study of American youth who just happened to love surfing.
With its stupendous score by Basil Poledouris this sweeping film is one of the decade's finest. Jan-Michael Vincent survived and made other hits like White Line Fever and Baby Blue Marine and even snagged the male lead in the smash TV mini-series The Winds of War . From this he was cast as Stringfellow Hawke in AirWolf a show that not only ran for 3 years but attained a devoted fan base.
Vincent was at the peak of his career being paid $200,000 per episode. Unfortunately everything in the life of Jan-Michael Vincent collapsed and the next two decades revealed a grotesquely aged JMV victim of drugs, alcohol, auto wrecks and all around misery. Jan-Michael Vincent was a sexy stud whose all-American good looks, fabulous body and well publicized penis created a lasting glow in the gay libido of his era.
Vincent was also a decent actor with one great film to his credit.
If you want to see why gays loved JMV in the 70's rent or buy Big Wednesday .
This paean to Southern California youth is an elegiac testimonial to not only America in the 70s, but to the youth and beauty of Jan-Michael Vincent. Continue reading
