UK: Man jailed for killing gay teenager by setting his genitals on fire at party
The victim instantly went up in flames with Sheard and others running away instead of helping him. Steven, who lived alone and had Asperger syndrome, epilepsy and a speech impairment, died the next day in hospital from 60% burns. Sheard, who initially tried to blame Steven for setting himself on fire, eventually admitted manslaughter, and was jailed for three-and-a-half years on Thursday.
The victim was bullied at the party over his disability and the fact he was gay, before being dared to strip to his boxers. Judge Roger Keen told Sheard: Egged on by others you sought to put a flame to Steven. What it did was engulf him in a fire.
You tried to briefly assist and then you ran away. That in my judgment is serious aggravation. The Mirror reports at the hospital before he died Steven told his father Kevin that: A lad took a bottle out of a drawer and chucked it over him.
The next thing he remembered was going up in flames. Steven was openly gay and had moved to the flat where he lived alone because of bullying at his previous address. Andrew Smith, defending, said: It was the result of a criminally stupid prank that went wrong in a bad way.
Sheard, of Cudworth, near Barnsley, initially tried to blame Steven for setting himself on fire. He was jailed for three-and-a-half years after he admitted manslaughter On Friday, Labour MP Diane Abbott criticised the sentence on Twitter as being shockingly low . Detective Chief Inspector Sean Middleton said: Steven was described by all who know him as a very caring and likeable young man, whose family will miss him greatly.
His generous spirit was taken advantage of and a single thoughtless act resulted in his death.

Pope Francis stood up for civil unions in an attempt to avoid equal marriage in Argentina
Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, 76, publicly opposed equal marriage, and in the past described same-sex marriage and gay couples adopting as a destructive attack on God s plan. The new pope has also said that same-sex adoption adoption is a form of discrimination and abuse against children. He wagered on a position of greater dialogue with society, his biographer said.
He publicly criticised the equal marriage bill making its way through Argentina s legislature, but supported cilvil unions. The cardinal s proposal was subsequently killed during a heated debate between bishops, the report suggests. He listened to my views with a great deal of respect, one gay activist said, according to the biographer.
He told me that homosexuals need to have recognized rights and that he supported civil unions, but not same-sex marriage. Some critics have taken this as as sign that the new pope could signal a new and more progressive direction for the Catholic Church. In 2010, Argentina s Senate voted 33-27 to support a bill to legalise equal marriage.
President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner supported the legislation, making Argentina the first Latin American country to allow same-sex marriage, and full adoption. The decision of Pope Francis to greet Zimbabwe s President Robert Mugabe at the pontiff s inauguration mass has been met with condemnation from human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell. Last week ministers in Denmark dubbed the newly elected Pope Francis harmful , expressing disappointment that the Vatican did not choose someone more progressive on LGBT and women s rights, but remain hopeful that he may prove them wrong.

UK: Man charged in connection with the murder of gay socialite Roberto Troyan
Troyan, 63, who was known as Robert, died on 8 March at his flat in Mount Street. Troyan s friend Sean McGuigan told the London Evening Standard last week that he believed the 63-year-old was too trusting . He said: A lot of people around him were after his money.
He had some incredibly expensive antiques in his flat including a vase worth 100,000. He was incredibly trusting, too trusting. He would lavish gifts on people and was quite carefree with his money.
Troyan was discovered with a gash to his head in a pool of blood by his maid in the kitchen of his luxury rented Mayfair flat. A post-mortem examination confirmed he died of head injuries. The Mail reports Troyan s mother, Marie, 83, described her son as one in a million but said there had been a terrible change in circumstances after the death of his late partner, architect and interior designer Anthony Feldman.
Feldman s clients included Princess Michael of Kent and former Tory Cabinet minister Jonathan Aitken. Troyan and Feldman were among the first same-sex couples in London to enter into a civil partnership in 2005. The ceremony was held eight days before Feldman s death.
An obituary in the Times after Feldman s death said: They were both immensely kind and generous to people in need and to charities for the homeless. Trudie Styler enlisted them for her and Sting s campaign for Tibet. Get the latest LGBT headlines in your inbox with our free daily newsletter!

‘The Making of Rock Hudson’ Headed for Theaters
It was a time when a leading man s career could be destroyed if the vice squads or the tabloids got the wrong impression.
From Hudson s arranged marriage to Phyllis Gates after a tabloid threatened to expose his homosexuality in 1955 to his highly publicized death as the first major movie star to die from AIDS-related complications in 1985, The Making of Rock Hudson will highlight the life of a man trapped in the closet by his own success, living in an era of deeply rooted homophobia. John McCain s daughter: Being a Republican who supports gay marriage is a b*tch
The blogger also tweeted that she was excited to be involved with the talk, and said it is a cause close to my heart. She was joined by Margaret Hoover, a Republican LGBT rights activist. Hoover said: we want a Republican Party where Rob Portman and Rand Paul and Marco Rubio all are in the same room.
And that s code for freedom to marry gets a seat at the table, she said. So there really is a new movement, a new day, for the conservative movement, for the Republican Party. It s all starting now.
The timing is perfect.
Hoover also suggested that she hopes to see a future where conservatives took on other LGBT rights issues, including the Violence Against Women Act Discuss this Get the latest LGBT headlines in your inbox with our free daily newsletter!

US Catholic scholar: Political parties accepting homosexuality will lead to disaster
Just minutes after the party released a report stating its new efforts to become more welcoming and inclusive, the party chairman Reince Priebus distanced himself from it. This is not my report, Mr Priebus told reporters, describing the contents as simply recommendations by a five-person panel even though he was the person who had commissioned the self-audit after the party s defeat to President Obama in 2012. The perception that we re the party of the rich unfortunately continues to grow, said Mr Priebus.
Criticism also came from Jenny Beth Martin, national coordinator for the Tea Party Patriots, who said the party is straying from its conservative message.
