Rick Perry said he was 'greatly disappointed' at the decision to lift the ban (Image: Gage Skidmore) Texas Governor Rick Perry, has voiced his disappointment at the Boy Scouts of America s (BSA) decision to lift its national ban on gay youth members. Perry, who has been vocally opposed to the BSA lifting the ban, said in a statement on Thursday that he woud cherish his scouting days, but that he was greatly disappointed with the outcome of the vote. The final vote took place today, in Dallas-Fort Worth, Grapevine, where over 60% of the 1,400 strong national council of local leaders, voted to lift the national ban.

The lifting of the ban will take effect on 1 January 2014, and will mean local scouting troops can decide on whether or not to allow gay members. A ban on openly-gay adult scout leaders and volunteers remains in place. The Boys Scouts of America has been built upon the values of faith and family for more than 100 years and today s decision contradicts generations of tradition in the name of political correctness, said Perry in the statement.

While I will always cherish my time as a scout and the life lessons I learned, I am greatly disappointed with this decision. Perry said in February that he thought the Boy Scouts of America shouldn t remove its ban on openly gay scouts, volunteers and staff. He also said that Madonna had taken a gratuitous shot at the BSA, when she said that it should lift its ban on gay volunteers, members and staff at the GLAAD Media Awards.

Discuss this Get the latest LGBT headlines in your inbox with our free daily newsletter!

Gay Norfolk - Local Contact And Information

Ian Paisley Jr said that gay sex repulsed him The DUP MP Ian Paisley Jr was challenged on Question Time about his 2007 interview where he said that he was repulsed by gays and lesbians. At the time he said: I am, unsurprisingly, a straight person. I am pretty repulsed by gay and lesbianism.

I think it is wrong. I think that those people harm themselves and without caring about it harm society. He added: That doesn t mean to say that I hate them.

I mean, I hate what they do. Responding to a question by David Dimbleby, Mr Paisley said: I am repulsed by many things. The actions, and not specificly the individuals. I am repulsed by people who are not homosexual as well sometimes.

Asked why he didn t support same-sex marriage, Mr Paisely said: I believe that marriage is fundamentally about creating children, and who in turn to create society. I ll be accused of being homophobic, almost as bad as being a racist, and everything else that s nasty in the world. He added that Christians are scared off about expressing this sort of view.

Mr Paisley claimed that he has received 3,000 pieces of communication against same-sex marriage and five letters in opposition to it . PinkNews assumes Mr Paisley meant that he received five letters in favour of same-sex marriage. Peter Tatchell said he was sorry and sad that Mr Paisley had such intolerant views.

In response, Mr Paisley said to Mr Tatchell: You can get married today Peter, you just can t get married to a man. Responding to Mr Paisley s jibe, dormer Islamist turned turned anti-extremist campaigner Maajid Nawaz said to Mr Paisley you re yesterdays news adding what you just said in your spiel almost sounded like I m not racist but my best friend is black. He said that Mr Paisley spoke bigoted opinions .

Vernon Coaker, the Labour Shadow Northern Ireland Secretary said: I think people should be able to chose, if same-sex marriage is available in England, Wales and in Scotland, it should be available to people in Northern Ireland. What I d say to the Northern Ireland executive is to allow this to happen. This is about love and equality before the law and people in Northern Ireland should have the same rights as everywhere else as everybody in the UK.

Northern Ireland s Assembly voted against same-sex marriage after the DUP vetoed introducing equality. Sinn Fein education minister John O Dowd said: If there is a couple in love who want to come together under the marriage banner, we should enable them to do that. Theresa Villiers, the Northern Ireland Secretary said: The reason I voted for equal civil marriage is that I simply couldn t justify denying access to that institution on the grounds of someone s sexuality.

A man in the audience who described himself as a swivelled eyed loon , said that same-sex marriage was the same as redefining a cat as a dog.

Discuss this Get the latest LGBT headlines in your inbox with our free daily newsletter!

Gay Norfolk - Local Contact And Information

The Nevada Assembly passed the bill 27 votes to 14 The Nevada Assembly today passed a resolution which could eventually lead to a repeal of the state s ban on same-sex marriage. The bill, which was passed by the Nevada Senate last month 12 votes to 9, could eventually lead to a repeal of a 2002 voter-approved constitutional amendment which bans equal marriage in the state. Today, the Assembly passed the bill, with an overwhelming majority of 27 votes to 14.

All no votes were Republicans. The vote puts the bill on track to be approved by the House in the next legislative session, and to go to voters in 2016. Marc Solomon, campaign director of Freedom to Marry, released a statement, which said: Lawmakers in Nevada took a huge step today toward undoing a discriminatory amendment that never should have been written into the state constitution and advancing the freedom to marry.

We look forward to the day that Nevada couples join those in the 12 other marriage states in being able to make a lifelong commitment to the person they love. In 2002, voters in Nevada approved an amendment to the state constitution stating that only a marriage between a male and female person shall be recognized and given effect in this state. At that point, the vote was 337,197 to 164,573 for the amendment.

In June 2009, The law allowing domestic partnerships was passed, and became effective in September of that year, which allowed same-sex couples some rights, but not the full benefits of marriage. During the Senate debate around the bill, Senator Kelvin Atkinson nervously announced that he is gay, saying he had not intended to come out, but felt that the time was right. I m black.

I m gay I know this is the first time many of you have heard me say that I am a black, gay male, he said.

Discuss this Get the latest LGBT headlines in your inbox with our free daily newsletter!

Gay Norfolk - Local Contact And Information

The Boy Scouts of America said it would not 'sacrifice its mission' over gay members The Boy Scouts of America has released an official statement noting that it has lifted its ban on gay youth members, saying that it would not sacrifice its mission over the societal issue of whether to allow gay members. The final vote took place today, in Dallas-Fort Worth, Grapevine, where over 60% of the 1,400 strong national council of local leaders, voted to lift the national ban. The statement from the BSA notes that its ban on adult scout leaders, both volunteers and staff, remains in place, and that following the review proces for this resolution, it will not be considering another resolution in the near future.

From 1 January 2014, the ban will be lifted, and the statement notes the transition time needed to communicate and implement this policy to its approximately 116,000 Scouting units. The full statement from the BSA is available to read below: For 103 years, the Boy Scouts of America has been a part of the fabric of this nation, with a focus on working together to deliver the nation s foremost youth program of character development and values-based leadership training. Based on growing input from within the Scouting family, the BSA leadership chose to conduct an additional review of the organization s long-standing membership policy and its impact on Scouting s mission.

This review created an outpouring of feedback from the Scouting family and the American public, from both those who agree with the current policy and those who support a change. Today, following this review, the most comprehensive listening exercise in Scouting s history the approximate 1,400 voting members of the Boy Scouts of America s National Council approved a resolution to remove the restriction denying membership to youth on the basis of sexual orientation alone. The resolution also reinforces that Scouting is a youth program, and any sexual conduct, whether heterosexual or homosexual, by youth of Scouting age is contrary to the virtues of Scouting.

A change to the current membership policy for adult leaders was not under consideration; thus, the policy for adults remains in place. The BSA thanks all the national voting members who participated in this process and vote. The policy change is effective Jan.

1 , 2014, allowing the Boy Scouts of America the transition time needed to communicate and implement this policy to its approximately 116,000 Scouting units. The Boy Scouts of America will not sacrifice its mission, or the youth served by the movement, by allowing the organization to be consumed by a single, divisive, and unresolved societal issue. As the National Executive Committee just completed a lengthy review process, there are no plans for further review on this matter.

While people have different opinions about this policy, we can all agree that kids are better off when they are in Scouting. Going forward, our Scouting family will continue to focus on reaching and serving youth in order to help them grow into good, strong citizens. America s youth need Scouting, and by focusing on the goals that unite us, we can continue to accomplish incredible things for young people and the communities we serve.

Discuss this Get the latest LGBT headlines in your inbox with our free daily newsletter!

Gay Norfolk - Local Contact And Information

The BSA voted to lift its ban on gay members, but retained its ban on gay adult volunteers and staff The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) on Thursday ended its long-time ban on gay youth members, after its national council voted to lift the national ban. The final vote took place today, in Dallas-Fort Worth, Grapevine, where over 60% of the 1,400 strong national council of local leaders, voted to lift the national ban. The decision will allow local scouting troops to decide on whether to permit gay members, however leaves in place a policy which forbids openly gay adult volunteers and staff.

The President of the BSA Wayne Perry, today wrote an editorial piece for USA Today, in which he said allowing gay members into the scouts would be the right decision. In July 2012, after a two year review, the Boy Scouts of America announced it would retain its ban on gay members, volunteers and staff. Earlier this month, the Western Los Angeles branch of the BSA voiced its opposition to the discriminatory policy.

The LA council backed a resolution which states that no youth or adult should be excluded as a leader, volunteer or staff member solely based on their sexual orientation or preference. The Boy Scouts of America is currently embroiled in a debate over whether to lift its ban on gay volunteers, members and staff. In February, it delayed the vote until May due to the complexity of the issue .

A poll released in February found that a majority of US voters thought the Boy Scouts of America should drop its ban on gay scouts, volunteers and staff.

Discuss this

Gay Norfolk - Local Contact And Information

Amatuer, obscured video footage, appears to show a gay teenager being forced out of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) after coming out as gay. The video is part of Ryan James Yezak s upcoming gay-rights documentary Second Class Citizens . It shows 19-year-old Eric Jones talking to the director of a summer camp in Missouri about his sexuality.

The official said: As far as I m concerned, your lifestyle is your lifestyle. It has nothing whatsoever to do with the way I look at an individual or the way I judge them. However, by telling me what you just told me, it automatically takes you out of the program I really have no choice now.

The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) is currently sitting in a two-day meeting, of 1,400 local leaders, in order to consider allowing gay members into the organisation. A proposed change would allow individual scouting troops on whether to allow gay members, however would leave in place the ban on gay adult volunteers and staff. Officials at the meeting will begin opening ballots on Wednesday, to allow the vote to take place on the proposed change.

The final vote is scheduled to take place today in Dallas-Fort Worth, Grapevine. The UK Scouting movement is inclusive of LGBT people. The ban on LGBT people is only upheld by the Boy Scouts of America.

Discuss this

Gay Norfolk - Local Contact And Information
