Gay Bishop Gene Robinson: We Are Making Great Headway Gene Robinson, who was elected in 2003 as the first openly gay Episcopal bishop, spoke this week with CNN’s Ashleigh Banfield about the great strides LGBT people have made the past few years with help from the Obama administration, and the evolving positive attitude most Americans have regarding gay equal rights. A new film, Love Free Or Die , documents Robinson’s rise to prominence as an outspoken gay rights activist. Bishop Robinson has also written a new book, God Believes In Love , which argues for gay marriage from a religious perspective.
