Gaydar 1 has been busy behind the scenes working with DrThom 2 and Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in a record breaking project. The project reached more gay men than any other online surveys or sexual health clinical surveys. And it wasn t just us that thought so , the project won an award at this year s BASHH (British Association for Sexual Health and HIV) conference!

Medical research has suggested that 1 in 20 gay men in London have undiagnosed HIV. So that s why we teamed up with DrThom (the online doctors service) and Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in a study that was called Home Sampling Through Social Network Websites; Can we reduce undiagnosed HIV? HIV testing kits were marketed to Gaydar users, and this is how it all worked: Every day during the survey, 200 gay men in London were invited through Gaydar to take a HIV risk assessment After this, everyone who took the assessment was offered a postal HIV testing kit from DrThom Overall, 4500 Gaydar users were invited to take the test 209 men clicked through to get more info on home sampling, many of whom had never been tested for HIV 132 HIV home testing kits were requested in this survey and 4 were new cases of HIV Because of our work alongside Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and DrThom, four guys were able to identify that they had HIV earlier than they would have done so without this study.

It is so important to get checked out for HIV the earlier a person is diagnosed with HIV, the better as earlier treatment for it is much more likely to be successful.

We know talking to a doctor about that sort of thing can be awkward , but you can take a HIV test through DrThom without having to see anyone.
